Sand filter works by pull the water through the gravel or substrate and up tubes called uplift tube. It works to get the water to come up these tubes either by airstone with air pump or a power head that fits onto the uplift tube and pumps the water across the top of the aquarium. Mechanical filtration occurs as water passes through the gravel and the downside is the biological filtration.
